When Scout, a 34-year-old Paint gelding, was spotted at the Bowie Kill Pen Auction, his condition was heartbreaking. Starving, with a swollen knee the size of a baseball, he was being ridden through the auction by the auctioneer himself—an image that Tecate Horse Rescue founder DJ Osborne will never forget. In that moment, DJ knew she had to intervene.

Scout was immediately pulled from the auction and rushed to a nearby veterinarian, who, with 30 years of experience, declared his heart murmur the loudest she had ever heard. His chances looked slim. He remained in quarantine in Texas for 90 days as we worked to put enough weight on him to survive the long journey to California.

Unlike most kill pen rescues who begin to bounce back within two weeks, Scout hovered at death’s edge. Day after day, DJ found him lying flat out in his pen, unmoving. She had to steel herself each time, reminding herself that even if he passed, at least he had known love and safety in his final days—unlike the horrific end that awaited him in slaughter.

But then, after three long weeks, a miracle.

One morning, DJ walked up to his pen and found Scout standing, alert, and looking right at her. He had decided to fight. From that moment on, he continued to gain strength and spirit, each day brighter than the last.

Now over 35 years old, Scout is healthy, happy, and retired with dignity. He’s a gentle, wise soul who enjoys sunshine, soft brushes, and the peace he waited a lifetime to find. Scout is available for adoption as a pasture companion to a loving, caring home—someone who sees the value in a horse who’s lived a thousand lives and still chooses joy.
