When Prince arrived at Tecate Horse Rescue, he was barely recognizable as the proud, gentle soul he is today.

Rescued from a kill pen auction in Kemp, Texas, Prince was just 12 years old—but his body told a much older, more painful story. He was beaten, bruised, and bloody. Fear radiated from him. His eyes were dull with despair, and he trembled at the sight of people. Clearly, this beautiful gelding had endured unthinkable cruelty. He couldn’t be caught, didn’t trust hands or voices, and flinched at every movement. His spirit was broken.

But we saw something in him. We saw a horse who wanted to believe in people again.

Over the next 12 months, with patience, love, and consistency, Prince began to heal. We never rushed him. We let him come to us when he was ready. Day by day, his wounds healed, his eyes brightened, and his confidence returned. First, he allowed a gentle hand. Then a halter. Then trust.

Today, Prince is a rideable, loving, and willing partner. He walks with calm assurance, greets visitors with curiosity, and enjoys trail rides with our volunteers. He’s not just rideable—he’s reliable. The transformation has been nothing short of miraculous.

Now, Prince is ready for the next chapter in his story: a forever home with someone who sees the treasure he is. He deserves a lifetime of kindness, comfort, and connection.
