Meet Jeffery and learn about trust

Article

What does it take to build trust… when trust has been broken?
Today, I want to introduce you to Jeffery.
Jeffery is a young horse—about 5–7 years old—with a sweet nature and a story we don’t fully know, but can clearly feel. Like many of the horses who come to us at Tecate Horse Rescue, he’s still learning how to feel safe in the world.
He’s been haltered. He’s started the process.
But he’s not finished—and that’s exactly the point.
Jeffery is what we call a “work in progress.” And in many ways, that makes him a powerful reflection of the work we do—not just with horses, but with people.
At the ranch, we see it every day:
Trust isn’t built through force.
It’s built through consistency, patience, and presence.
Jeffery will likely become rideable with time, but right now, what he truly needs is someone willing to meet him where he is. Someone experienced. Someone steady. Someone who understands that healing—whether horse or human—doesn’t happen on a deadline.
This is the kind of work that doesn’t always show up on a spreadsheet.
But it’s the kind that changes lives.
For the right person, Jeffery isn’t just a project—he’s an opportunity to build something real.
And for those of us doing this work every day, he’s a reminder:
Progress doesn’t have to be fast to be meaningful.
If you or someone in your network has the experience and heart to take on a horse like Jeffery, we’d love to connect.
