Our Adoption Process

At Tecate Horse Rescue, we believe every horse deserves a loving, safe, and permanent home. If you're interested in adopting one of our equines, thank you for taking the first step in giving a rescued horse a second chance. Here's how our adoption process works:

1. Complete the Adoption Application

To begin, please fill out and submit our Adoption Application. We ask for detailed information so we can ensure a good match between horse and home.

2. Application Review (3–5 Days)

Our team takes 3–5 days to carefully review your application. During this time, we will:

Contact the references you provided

Speak with your current veterinarian and farrier

Schedule and conduct a site visit of the property where the horse will be housed

3. Approval & Contract Submission

If your application is approved, you'll be invited to complete an Adoption Contract, which will include the name of the specific horse and all necessary details. Both the application and contract are reviewed first by our Rescue Manager and then submitted to the Adoptions Committee, a subcommittee of our Board of Directors, for final approval.

4. Finalize Details

Once approved, we will work with you to finalize:

The adoption fee

Arrange transportation

The formal date of transfer for the horse

5.Post-Adoption Communication

We remain committed to each horse even after they leave our care. As part of your adoption agreement, we ask that you:

Check in every three months with a current photo and a brief written update on the horse’s health, living conditions, and overall well-being

  • Your ongoing communication helps us continue our mission and ensures the lasting success of every adoption.
  • If you have any questions or would like help choosing the right horse for your home, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
  • Thank you for considering adoption—and for being part of the healing journey for horses and humans alike.
